What does my experience say about me? Will it get me anywhere in 2010?

December 30, 2009

Love where you areI am confident that I am not alone in this query at this particular moment in time, in the Western world on the brink of 2010. What does it all mean… you could lose your job or your clients at any moment… nothing is guaranteed… many boomers who were once affluent and who enjoyed profitable careers for decades are asking themselves similar questions today. This kind of personal reflection should be approached very carefully as it wouldn’t take much to find yourself falling down the rabbit hole of despair.

My advice is, hang in there and don’t despair. I know, it sounds trite. Thing is, one of the biggest benefits of being knocked off our blocks of self satisfaction and our sense of entitlement is that it nudges us to take a look at our lives and take stock of where we are.  What really make us happy? It’s really not the money. Sure, money brings a certain amount of peace… but who hasn’t found themselves in a place in their life at one time or another where they had all the stuff, only to find that they weren’t really that happy after all? Many of us are actually too busy working to really enjoy life.

Times are tough – take advantage of any “free” time you have now and smile at your neighbour, go out of your way to do something nice for your partner, take a yoga class, lay down on the safa and read a book.  Life is short. Enjoy it while it lasts. Stop worrying about yourself and think about someone else for a little while, you’ll be amazed at how well it works!

Thanks for the great blog. I think that while most people believe that actions speak louder than words – many of us are much better able to express these kinds of thoughts and actions in writing and with intention – while completely unable to accomplish them in real life. Most of us are selfish by nature – which is why these “rabbit hole of despair” moments can leave us immersed in the “why me” mentality. We live with a devil and angel on each shoulder and often, the devil wins. Kindness and being selfless take a heck of a lot more courage than most people realize.
Sadly, Karma is a bitch :(
